Fresh from wrapping up the Formula 3 Premier Series National Class title at the previous round. Cameron Shields stepped up to compete for outright honours in the Premier Class at Phillip Island in Victoria.
After building up confidence throughout the wet practice sessions. The 15 year old Shields seized the opportunity to showcase his talent amongst the competitive outright field. Qualifying second fastest in tricky conditions at the fast and flowing Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit.
The Toowoomba local continued to keep his much more experienced rivals on their toes during the weekends three races.
After a tough start to the opening race, Shields fought his way back to third. Finishing just behind team mate Chris Anthony and championship leader Tim Macrow.
In the second and third races of the weekend Shields put on an impressive showing to challenge to Macrow (Multiple Formula 3 Champion) for the lead. Pushing him all the way to the chequered flag to finish second in the both races.
A successful debut weekend in the Premier Class earnt Shields second place on the outright podium for the round.
“My first weekend in the Premier Class did prove to be tough” Shields admitted.
“I had some really close racing with both Christopher Anthony and Tim Macrow.”
“My goal was to get on the podium, which I achieved with a 2nd place. I’m now looking forward to taking what I’ve learnt to Sydney Motorsport Park in a few weeks time and have another crack at the championship leader.”
The Formula 3 Premier Series continues with the final round at Sydney Motorsport Park, November 11-13.
