A consistent round for Jake Klein in Sydney saw him move up to seventh in the Toyota 86 Racing Series championship with just two rounds left in the 2017 season.

Klein spent Friday’s practice sessions coming to grips with his new car, which he debuted at Sydney Motorsport Park, with a striking red livery.

He then took full advantage of his new Toyota 86 to qualifying tenth for the opening race of the weekend, at a venue that most of his rivals use as their home test track.

Being cautious with his new car, Klein struggled to nail his starts, which saw him drop out of the top ten at the beginning of each race.

However, putting on a stunning show for the fans, Klein charged his way back up through the field to finish ninth in the opening race after a lengthy battle with championship rivals Dylan Gulson and Luke King.

He then backed up that performance in race two of the weekend, moving up to seventh and battling with Trent Grubel, who qualified second fastest, for sixth place. Again after dropping out of the top ten at the start of race.

It was a similar story in the in third race. Klein again dropped out of top ten at the start, before battling his way back up to seventh.

“The starts were a big issue for me, which left me having to work my butt off to get back.” said Klein.

“There were a few guys who made it real hard for me, and I almost got taken out 4 times in 2 races. I was really conscious not to wreck the new car.”

“That said, I had a fairly good weekend. I know if I got the start we could have ran with the guys up the front. We knew all along we had a great race car and pace. However, by the time I cleared the guys that were slower the leaders had already gone.”

“But on a positive we have moved to 7th in the championship, and we’re  the highest in points of those drives with a DNF.”

Focus now moves to the next round of the championship at the famous Mt Panorama in Bathurst as Klein looks to continues his progress in the championship.
